<description>Not so much response on this topic. :-(

Call me 'n old man - but these five minutes could save a lot. What about other things than saving something like resources? We would provide our children, our brains, our governments with some thoughts... Do we live for our companies? - are they as bad enough to make them disturbing their business?
Maybe we seem to be a little helpless, but what other chance do we have to improve our efficiency? Let's switch off for some minutes and let's see what will happen; are we able to think about future?
On the other hand: It's some kind of magic to tell about the story of the underdog. Compared with hp, ebay and google we are, still, "kleine lichter" - but small lamps consume power, too - and give it to you and you and you...</description>

<description>"The average US household (in 2001) used 10.6kwh in a year. So our five minute shutdown will save approx 25% of one average US households entire yearly electricity consumption. Not bad for a five minute shut-down."

I'm sure the average US household used 10600 kwh!!!!
An average german single household uses 1600 kwh.

<description>The above made suggestion is quite a nice and good idea. But the "power on every device at the same time" issue would be indeed a big problem for electricity networks. I would say that maybe if it’s coordinated in a good way its worth to think about it. Also sometimes the systems are really overbuilt, which means there would be a potential to reduce power consumption.

In my opinion the big players in the internet game doesn't only have social responsibility, they should also think about their way they influence the environment. On the first view, internet business seems to be a clean business, but...
Of course we need electricity for running all the equipment and most of us should no that power is not just coming out of the plug...there is something behind!

So let’s start a good discussion about how we all in the internet business can reduce the harming of our mother nature. Internet is in most cases related to freedom, take this freedom to do a good thing!
